What is a filling?
A filling is a way to restore a decayed tooth back to its normal function and shape. During the treatment, Dr. Kim first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out area with a filling material such as a composite resin (tooth colored filling). By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also help prevent further decay.
How Do I Know if I Need a Filling?
During the checkup, Dr. Kim will use a small mirror to examine the surfaces of each tooth. Anything that looks abnormal will then be closely checked with special instruments. We may also take X-rays to help check the status of your teeth. The type of treatment Dr. Kim chooses will depend on the extent of damage caused by decay.

Why composite fillings are better than other filling materials?
Traditional metal fillings may change shape with time, which can cause them to crack or leak. Composite fillings actually bond with tooth structure, creating a stronger tooth. Because they require less tooth preparation, composite fillings allow us to offer patients conservative restorations.
When you have a cavity, our office will use only tooth-colored, composite fillings to repair the damage. We can also replace gold or silver fillings with composite. Using tooth-colored fillings will not only make teeth look better, but will also strengthen your teeth.
