Why is a crown needed?
To protect a weak tooth from fracturing or to hold together a cracked tooth
To restore a fractured tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
To replace a large filling when there isn't a lot of tooth left
To hold a dental bridge in place
To cover poorly shaped or severely discolored teeth
To cover a dental implant
To make a cosmetic modification
Dental crown procedure
At the initial visit in crown preparation, Dr. Kim will numb the tooth and the gum tissue around the tooth. Afterwards, the tooth receiving the crown is trimmed down on all sides to make room for the crown. If the tooth does not have a root canal or a large area of the tooth is missing due to decay, Dr. Kim will use filling material to build up the tooth to support the crown. After reshaping the tooth, Dr.Kim will take a digital impression of the tooth. Digital scanning allows to fast and precise impressions of the tooth. Before the end of the appointment, Dr. Kim will make a temporary crown to cover and protect the prepared tooth while the crown is being made at the lab.
At the secondary visit, Dr. Kim will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of the permanent crown before permanently cementing it.
What is a dental bridge?
Dental bridges are fixed prosthetic restorations that bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of one or more fake teeth held in place by dental crowns called an abutment.
